WFPS Mentoring Program

AAFPRS Women in Facial Plastic Surgery
Mentoring Program

In Homer's The Odyssey we recall that when Odysseus leaves for the Trojan War he places his trusted friend Mentor to watch over his son Telemachus until his return. However, it was the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena, who assumed the appearance of Mentor to assist the young Telemachus in his travels. Once again a woman saves the day!

The term mentor invokes a trusted friend, counselor or teacher, usually a more experienced person. We hope that the WFPS Mentoring Program will provide the same, but ideally over time we hope it will become a two-way, professional relationship, where each person asks questions and becomes cognizant of the various options that are available at all stages of one's career and personal life.

The Mentor should:

  • be an AAFPRS Member for at least seven years
  • be interested in serving as a Mentor
  • complete the mentor credentials/contact information form
  • possess good interpersonal skills, particularly listening
  • initiate contact with Mentee: By phone and/or e-mail
  • contact Mentee at least 2-3 times per year and try at least once a year to meet in person (usually at a meeting)
  • be available to advise, answer questions, introduce to other physicians, encourage participation in AAFPRS committees

The Mentee should:

  • be an AAFPRS member who is a resident, fellow or in practice for five years or less
  • complete and submit the Mentor request form
  • keep a list of questions as they arise for it is a good way to begin conversations with the mentor
  • try to attend the AAFPRS Meetings

Potential Topics for Discussion:

  • How to balance home life and career
  • Advice about fellowship programs
  • How to become more involved in the Academy
  • How to become more involved academically
  • How to network in the academy
  • What works for marketing your cosmetic practice
  • Questions about patient care of difficult patients
