Domestic Violence Victom

My name is Courtney and I saw Face to Face while researching grants for woman and domestic violence. I have been looking into starting a support group for woman as I am a survivor of a 5 yr domestic violence relationship. I am writing to you because during this relationship, I began picking at my skin. It became a nervous habit that I used to numb myself from the pain and reality of my life. Picking created an escape for me. You can imagine the damage that I caused myself. It has been a constant reminder of that pain and what I have overcome every time I look in the mirror. It affects my self esteem and self worth more then I can share with you and was afraid that these scars would forever be a part of me until I saw your website and caught a glimmer of hope. I am reaching out to you and asking for your help in healing. My ultimate goal is to get these scars removed and to reach out to other woman. I feel that I have a purpose in life and that purpose is to reach out to women who are going through what I did in hopes of helping as many as I can. I would love to share my story of survival with you. I cant even tell you what you would be doing for me if you made this dream come true for me.
I pray to hear a reply,
Courtney

facial surgery

Hi,i am 24 years old i have a big scar on the right side of the face, after a fire accident i have it,can you help me with a surgery or something to remove it,thank you.

A burn injury is different from a linear scar. If it is just a linear scar then the scar is removed and a camouflaging technique like a geometric broken line or w-plasty would be used to make the straight line harder to see. if the scar is contracted and misaligned, a z-plasty can be used. dermabrasion could follow that to help with further camouflage.

if there is a larger area of your face burned and the skin does not look good, you would have most likely to rotate tissue from an adjacent area into the scarred area to remove it. ideally, you would not use a skin graft because it typically does not have as good color and texture match as tissue that is just adjacent to the burn. fortunately, the cheek typically has abundant tissue near it for rotation if the burn is not large. at 24 years of age, your skin may be a bit tighter though than say someone 70 years of age.

in summary, you really need to contact a facial plastic surgeon (you can find one near you in the locate a surgeon section of this Web site). i hope you find a solution to your problem.

I am a 21 year old girl from india and i am a victim of burn injury

Sir/Ma’am,I have the honor to state that I am a 21 year old girl from India and I am a victim of burn injury. I have sustained about 15% burns which includes the entire left half of my face covering eye, ear, lips and part of nose plus right arm and shoulder.I have consulted few doctors in the past who were all of general opinion that they would be grafting skin there after taking it from elsewhere from my body.I was thinking of late to feature my condition through your academy.I have been in this condition for the past 10 years. I wear a cotton bandage on my face in order to cover my affected area which is already healed by now. This accident took place in 2002 8th january. If required i will send you my photographs having the wound. I aim to get consulted by the best of doctors since i value all of their opinions, and i know this would become much easy after it gets broadcasted through your esteemed society.Kindly extend your helping hand in my already dilapidated conditon.I shall remain highly obliged to your kindself for the needful. I hope to hear from your kind end soon.

Thanking you,With best regards,Richa

I am sorry to hear of your situation. You can email info@aafprs.org to see if you qualify for services and if we have someone to help you.=)

I got cut in my face 8 years ago i would like to have them remove

Question: Am 36 years old I got cut in my face 8years ago I would like to have them remove I realy dont know were to go are who to talk with to see if they can be remove .can someone please help me

Answer: The best thing to do is to find a surgeon on our member list (just go to the map on the home page and find a list of surgeons near your area). remember when a scar revision is performed, the goal is not to eliminate the scar but to make the line very hard to see by creating an irregular fine line like via a geometric broken line repair, w-plasty, etc. that tricks the eye into not being able to see it well. That is the art and the science of scar revision.

i had a motorbike accident which gave me a heavy scar on my face

Question: Dear sir/madam I had a motorbike accident in March 2010 which gave me a heavy scar on my face. I wish to inquire if it is possible to remove the scare and if so, how much can it cost me. I will send the face pics to a given email. Thank you

Answer: unfortunately, this web site cannot answer your question directly since it represents the broad view of the many member surgeons who are part of the AAFPRS. however, that being said, a scar that is visible cannot be erased, i.e., the line cannot be entirely eliminated. however, the goal of a scar revision is to make a seemingly obvious line (raised, colored, depressed, linear) into one that is very hard to see using various strategies. for example, a geometric broken line breaks a scar into multiple small geometric limbs so that your eye naturally has a hard time seeing it since the line is converted into a mini zig and zag which makes things less visible. that is the goal of a good scar revision that a very obvious scar from a distance is only noticed really closely or barely at all.

my 31 year old son was bitten on the nose mouth by his dog

Question: My 31 year old son was bitten on the nose/mouth by his dog 2 days ago. The plastic surgeon at Georgetown Medical Center in DC who stitched him up with 15 sutures said he was bitten ” through all 3 layers ” between his upper lip and his nose. 1) to what degree can a resulting scar be minimized? 2) if a prominent scar is unavoidable, is it simplistic to suggest that a moustache can conceal all or nearly all of the scarring?

Answer: 1. a scar will hopefully fade to the point that it cannot be seen. it may need some dermabrasion to manage any small residual presence. sometimes it just heals badly and may need laser and scar injection treatments like 5-fluorouracial (5-FU). silicone gels can also be quite helpful on the wound for the first 9 to 12 weeks. ultimately if the scar heals poorly then in 6 months to a year a formal scar revision can be undertaken to make the scar much less visible. hopefully that won’t be necessary.

2. a mustache maybe needed but if you follow steps in #1, it could be avoided.

I have a scar but its on my face.

Question: Can a facial scar be removed with surgery?

Answer: Unfortunately, scars are not removed but just improved.  The goal is to take a scar that is very visible to the naked eye and make it much harder for one to see it even though there will still be a line there on close inspection.  The things that make a scar visible are if it is very straight, if it is of a different color than the surrounding skin, if it is at a different depth or convexity than the surrounding skin, if it is in a direction that runs counter to the normal lines on the face or if it is pulling unnaturally on surrounding tissues causing distortion.  Therefore, the goal of a scar revision is to improve all of these conditions.  When a linear scar is cut out and replaced with a line however it just looks like another line.  The goal is to make a line difficult to see by making it zig zag in minute little bends so that the eye has a hard time seeing it as a straight line.  This is visual trickery.  The gold standard of a scar revision is a geometric broken line repair that helps to truly irregularize a scar into tiny bends of triangles, trapezoids, etc. making it very hard to visualize if done well and if healing goes well.  This line can be further softened with dermabrasion down the road as need be.  Other methods like a z-plasty can be helpful to realign a scar that is misplaced in its direction i.e., that runs counter to the natural collagen lines of the face, or that is too shortened and contracted causing tissue distortion around it. A z-plasty is used to change the direction of a scar and to lengthen a contracted one.
