Ask
the Surgeon
My eyes look so much older and more tired-looking than the rest of my
face. Specifically, I am wondering if there is a procedure available to make my
eyelids seem less droopy. What can you suggest?
Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is an operation that diminishes the signs
of aging around the eyes by removing excess skin and fat of the upper and lower
eyelids. The droopiness that you describe is probably due to skin that has lost
its elasticity and has felt the effects of gravity. This excess skin tends to
collect in the upper and lower eyelids. In more extreme cases, excess skin can
cause an extra fold in the upper eyelid, hanging over the eyelashes and
obstructing vision. The lower eyelids may appear baggy due to projecting fat
deposits. Blepharoplasty will remove the sagging extra skin and the collected
fat, producing a brighter, more youthful appearance. Make an appointment with
your facial plastic surgeon to discuss if blepharoplasty is right for you and
what will best suit your needs.

Whats
New
Liposhaving is a new alternative to liposuction. With conventional liposuction
- widely performed by facial plastic surgeons - the procedure utilizes suction
in a back-and-forth motion to create the desired result. It is time-tested and
is widely used.
Liposhaving uses a light touch shaver in a slow back-and-forth motion to
eliminate unwanted fat and to contour the face. The facial plastic surgeon is
able to use the liposhaver under direct visualization, therefore, increasing
his or her ability to precisely remove fat while causing minimal trauma to the
surrounding soft tissue. Whether your facial plastic surgeon will recommend
liposuction or liposhaving will depend on the indications for the surgery and
the desired results

Health Tip
Most of the general population is unaware of proper daily skin care for your
face. With so many products and advertising ploys it is difficult to choose a
regimen that is right for your skin. You should pick a daily cleanser that
contains moisturizers; avoid both alkaline and deodorant soaps. After washing
your face, pat your skin dry and lubricate with a water-based moisturizer to
prevent dehydration. If venturing outside apply a sunscreen or sunblock with a
sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. You may want to try a water-based
moisturizer that contains sunscreen (to save that extra step). Besides using
the right products, promote a healthy body and healthy skin by heeding to the
following suggestions:
-
Eat a balanced diet including whole grains, fruits, and vegetables;
-
Exercise to benefit blood circulation; and
-
Avoid smoking, which increases wrinkles.
