To Pierce or Not to Pierce; What are the Risks?

Ask the Surgeon
My neck makes me look much older than I am. The skin sags and camouflages my chin. I have heard that a facelift can help the appearance of my neck, is this my only option?

As we age, our skin becomes less elastic causing it to droop. This sagging skin can be addressed by a facelift or a necklift. A facelift is a procedure where the skin is lifted, excess fat and skin is removed, and the skin is tightened.

The result is a rejuvenated appearance in the lower two-thirds of the face, i.e., cheek, chin, and neck areas. If you are looking to only improve the appearance of your neck, a necklift can include tightening sagging muscles and/or removing excess skin. In order to receive optimal results, contact your facial plastic surgeon for an evaluation on what would work best for you.

Whats New
Hair loss affects two out of every three men, and one in five women. Due to significant surgical advances with improved results, interest in hair replacement surgery has increased 316 percent from 1999 to 2001. Research and advancements continue to be made. On the horizon, could laser light reduce thinning hair? Scientists are studying the use of laser light to stimulate circulation and oxygenation to the hair follicle. By removing calcification and blockages around the hair bulb, this may encourage regenerative activity. More studies must be done, however, see your facial plastic surgeon for information on hair restoration procedures.

Health Tip
Your facial plastic surgeon recommends that you avoid prolonged sun exposure without proper sun protection (sunscreen or sunblock with at least SPF of 15). Not only does ultraviolet radiation from the sun damage your skin, but it also is linked directly to skin cancer. So, after surviving with sunblock, sunglasses, and protective clothing, is there a safe way to achieve that summer glow as you head into fall? A tanning salon has figured out a way to provide that bronze look without damaging your skin. Hollywood Tans®: offers 100 percent UV-free tanning. The client steps into a booth and nine jets mist self-tanning lotion (with the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone) for six seconds. The result is an even tan that may last up to seven days. The tanning solution also contains moisturizers and vitamins A, E, and C.
