Three Approaches to Patient Consultation (New)
(2000) 59:58 minutes. Harry Mittelman, M.D. 17:00 minutes. E. Gaylon McCollough, M.D. 16:00 minutes. Calvin M. Johnson, M.D. 26:33 minutes. This tape includes three examples of patient consultation. Determining why the patient is there, obtaining a medical history, discussing the surgical options, deciding on an approach and putting the patient at ease are some of the common points.

Dr. McCollough typically uses a computer generated image based on initial preoperative digital photos to help the patient understand what he wishes to accomplish. He is careful to point out the computer images are not a promise of results, rather they are an aid to visualizing how a procedure might change the appearance of a potential patient.

Dr. Johnson relies on diagrams and pre-operative photos to assist the patient in visualizing what he will try to accomplish. Both have the patient stand before a mirror while they describe what they see and what a given procedure could accomplish.

Dr. Mittelman accomplishes the same end by providing a mirror for the patient to look at themselves as he discusses what he sees and how he intends to approach the facial defects the patient sees. In Dr. Mittelman’s program we see his method of new patient evaluation and consultation. Of interest is his use of a “patient evaluation form” designed to quantify facial defects providing a systematic approach and evaluation with details obtained from this form.
