Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and the turkey should be the only one with the wattle this year. If you’ve noticed some slack skin and sagging below the chin, don’t despair. Surgery and painful treatments are not the only option.
The accumulation of fat under the chin can be a result of lifestyle, age or genetic factors and, unlike other common problem areas of the body, it’s harder to camouflage with clothing. Who wants to hide under a turtleneck year round?
“With advancing age, fat tends to redistribute throughout the face and neck,” says Dr. Edwin Williams, president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). “You tend to lose fat where you need it most, such as the cheeks, and gain fat in places where you may not want it, such as the jowls, chin and neck.”
Adds Dr. Williams, “The neck area has been notoriously hard to treat and historically required more invasive treatments like liposuction to remove unwanted fat. New non-invasive treatments like Kybella and now Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting are making it much more realistic and accessible for people to get rid of a dreaded turkey neck or double chin. We’ve seen a huge surge in both men and women asking about these procedures.”
Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable drug that treats a double chin by destroying fat cells, while Zeltiq recently earned FDA-clearance to use its fat freezing CoolSculpting procedure to address chin fat. Clinical trials show promising results with 20% fat reductions after one to two CoolSculpting treatments.
