Eyes No Longer Have to Tell the Story

New York, NY – October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The world we live in has a substantial number of women who are in physically abusive relationships. To help end the cycle of abuse, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) is working with survivors of domestic violence to break the sequence, enhance self-esteem and rebuild lives.

Domestic violence must be stopped. Over five million women are affected by domestic violence in the United States annually. Studies report that more than one million require medical treatment. Did you know that 75 percent of women in an abusive relationship endure injury to their head and face area?

  • 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime
  • A woman is battered every 9 seconds by an intimate or former partner in the United States
  • Women are more often victims of domestic violence than victims of burglary, muggings or other physical crimes combined

Many victims suffer from facial injuries and are not financially able to have these repaired. Rather than live with external scars, the AAFPRS offers consultation and surgery, pro-bono, to eligible individuals through FACE TO FACE: The National Domestic Violence Project. This is the first surgical group to take a firm stand and get involved http://www.aafprs.org/physician/humanitarian/ph_ffviolence.html
