Statement from Dr. Paul J. Carniol, President of the AAFPRS, on Recent Reports of

Facial Swelling and Fillers After the Covid-Moderna Vaccine

According to the FDA, two patients with dermal fillers have had adverse reactions to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) has closely been monitoring reports from the FDA and the vaccine manufacturers for its membership of 2,200 facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons. AAFPRS President Paul J. Carniol, MD provides a statement, which can be viewed here https://youtu.be/achtgXA6Ri8

“Each physician and her/his patients will have to decide whether to have filler and/or the COVID vaccine treatment.  Personally, considering the mortality and morbidity associated with COVID-19 infection for my patients, I am recommending that they should receive the vaccine,” says Dr. Carniol. “My counsel is based on the discovery that two patients out of over thirteen thousand five hundred patients who were treated with the Moderna vaccine developed transient facial swelling, which resolved uneventfully.  This is only 0.02% of the patients that were treated with the vaccine during the efficacy study.”

The AAFPRS will continue to monitor reports of incidents of reactions in patients with dermal fillers who received the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine and will update AAFPRS members and their patients.
