AAFPRS Highlights Importance of Choosing Board-Certified Surgeons for Ethnic Rhinoplasty

As patient demand for ethnic rhinoplasty continues to grow, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) urges patients considering this highly specialized procedure to seek out board-certified facial plastic surgeons with extensive experience in ethnic rhinoplasty.
According to the AAFPRS’s most recent annual survey, rhinoplasty surgery remains the most frequently requested facial plastic surgery procedure in 2024. Notably, about 80 percent of AAFPRS members report that more than 10 percent of rhinoplasty patients are seeking revisions of previous surgeries—underscoring the importance of selecting a qualified, experienced surgeon the first time around.

Ethnic rhinoplasty involves much more than reshaping the nose—it requires a deep understanding of diverse facial anatomy and an appreciation for cultural identity. Unlike traditional rhinoplasty, which often adheres to Western beauty ideals, ethnic rhinoplasty must be approached with individualized care that respects and preserves the patient’s unique features and heritage.

“Ethnic rhinoplasty is about refinement, not erasure. We want to preserve cultural features while enhancing natural beauty,” says Dr. Jason Hamilton, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon based in Los Angeles and the AAFPRS Past Group Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. “It’s essential that facial plastic surgeons have the technical expertise and cultural awareness to deliver results that align with a patient’s identity—not someone else’s standard of beauty. Beauty isn’t one size fits all—it’s as unique as we are. Choosing a board-certified facial plastic surgeon helps to ensure patients are working with someone trained to honor that balance.”

Dr. Hamilton, who specializes in ethnic rhinoplasty, emphasizes that poorly performed procedures, often by underqualified surgeons, can lead to disappointing outcomes, functional issues, and a loss of ethnic characteristics. This can result in physical and emotional harm, along with a greater need for revision surgery.

The AAFPRS reminds the public that certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a critical benchmark. Board-certified facial plastic surgeons undergo rigorous training, testing, and peer review. Patients are encouraged to ask about a surgeon’s credentials—and about what specific experience they have with ethnic rhinoplasty—before moving forward.
