Once the domain of aftershave ads and barbershop banter, the male grooming game has officially stepped into the operating room. According to 2024 survey results released by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the world's largest association of facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons, 92 percent of its members treated male patients last year—up 5 percent from 2023—making it official: Male patients are now one of the fastest-growing demographics seeking facial cosmetic procedures.
Times, They Are A-Changing
“Advancements in technology have made facial plastic surgery more precise, less invasive, and far more natural-looking,” says facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Patrick Byrne, MD, president of the AAFPRS. “When men see that they can enhance their appearance without obvious signs of surgery or long downtime, they feel much more comfortable taking that first step.”
To that end, 93 percent of surgeons report that the top procedure for men is rhinoplasty (nose job) and 77 percent agree that blepharoplasty (eye lid surgery) is the second most popular surgery, followed closely by facelifts, revisions, forehead lifts, and hair transplants. Neurotoxins, fillers, and skin treatments are the top three requested non-surgical procedures for men.
Hairlines are Back
Underscoring a strong desire among men to address hair loss and maintain a youthful appearance, the survey reveals that hair transplantation has emerged as the only procedure where men significantly outnumber women.
“Hair restoration is now a cornerstone of male aesthetics,” says Dr. Byrne. “Thanks to advanced techniques, results are more natural and accessible than ever—making it easier for men to take that step toward feeling more confident.”
Confidence is King
From Millennials perfecting their jawlines for social media to Gen Xers seeking a refreshed look that mirrors their energy level, men are discovering that self-care and self-confidence go hand-in-hand.
“Men are no longer shy about taking charge of their appearance,” says Dr. Byrne. “They’re not chasing perfection—they’re pursuing personal bests. Whether it’s for a promotion, a profile pic, or just peace of mind, we’re seeing a shift toward empowered choices.”
In response, AAFPRS members are tailoring consultations and procedures to better suit male facial anatomy and aesthetics, focusing on natural, strong, and more masculine results. “Taking pride in how you look doesn’t make you less of a man,” says Dr. Byrne “In fact, it might just make you more of the man you want to be. This is about vitality, not vanity.”
